In Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, an enraged mob murdered a tricycle driver after he allegedly fatally slashed a passenger over a N50 argument.
Around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the incident erupted at the Saptex junction of the Mbiama-Yenagoa route, resulting in chaos and panic as locals fled haphazardly as the mob surged toward the Amarata axis.
The young man was reportedly stabbed in the lower abdomen by the tricycle rider, who was from the northern region of Nigeria. The rider attempted to run but was apprehended by the mob. They beat the tricycle rider to death and set his body on fire after realizing the victim had passed away.
A statement issued by the command’s spokesman, Asinim Butswat, condemned the tricycle operator’s actions and called on the community to remain calm.
He said the command had deployed an anti-riot squad to restore calm as youths were mobilising to attack Northerners in the state capital.
